May 2017 meeting minutes

The meeting was called to order at 7:27 local time, May 23.

Attending: KC5MCE, AB5JK, K5QOW, WA6YJW and K5WW.

The Treasurer reports $1,222 in the safe.

Jim reports that the new Allstar/Echolink Raspberry Pi machine has been tested extensively for 2 days and seems to be running great on a borrowed server. The hardware will be relocated to where it was before; while he sorts out a small issue that recently seems to have popped up at the server PC in the shack.

KS5TX sent us a new PC with lots of RAM and a speedy CPU, to be installed at the second operating position. Since he built it into a heavy duty travel case, on a server rack size frame, it can also be taken into the field – safely – or simply added to our equipment rack. Neat! It still needs to have serial ports and a WiFi adapter added; but that will be done before the end of the week.Β  Thanks for the loaner!

A location for Field Day was discussed; we will be having it at the club shack for many reasons. We will need to test the generators and take care of a few other things to get ready, including fixing the strain relief loop on top of the tower.

In order to prepare and possibly take care of some last-minute thingies it was decided to have the next meeting the Tuesday before Field Day. So stop by on June 20!

The meeting was adjourned at 8:17.

April 2017 meeting minutes

The meeting was called to order at 7:23 PM.

Attending: Mary KU5Z, Jim AB5JK and Erik K5WW.

The Treasurer’s report shows $1,070 in the bank. That will go up, thanks to the proceeds of WW5XX’s donated gear and some more dues that were collected today.

The TS-2000 is back in the shack and appears to be fully functional. K5WW ran it through all the antennas at the shack, on all bands and various segments of the bands and it seems the ATU has been cured.

The Raspberry Pie project hasn’t been finished yet, due to Jim’s work commitments.

Jason KS5TX has offered both a cash donation and the donation of a 4U box to create a portable station out of position 2 in the shack. The rest of the money we’d have to come up with. This was discussed, briefly; but we need more input from the donor himself before we can finalize that deal.

There wasn’t quorum to hold elections; so we skipped that part. The meeting was adjourned at 8:25 PM.

Next meeting: May 23. Same place, same time!

World Amateur Radio Day

If there’s one day that every Amateur Radio operator should be on the air it is April 18. Every year. Whether you have a 1 Watt radio or run the full gallon, are limited to VHF only or have everything from DC to daylight, and have an antenna farm the size of North Dakota or can only work on that wet noodle: get on the radio on April 18!

Why? The International Amateur Radio Union was formed April 18, 1925. And without the IARU we wouldn’t have this wonderful hobby. Consider this our day!

No, that’s not some vehicle diagnostic code. Nor some experimental aircraft. Instead, it’s the official park designator for Kickapoo Cavern State Park used in the Texas State Parks on the Air event, this past weekend.

Half a handful of us (KS5TX, N5YPJ and K5WW) participated this weekend and enjoyed a beautiful, sunny day up at Kickapoo. And it was fun, fun, fun! We made about 80 QSOs into 12 other Texas parks and several other US states.

And here’s our biggest fan, Roger K0YY πŸ™‚ making a QSO with Jason:

Yup, it was windy. But Jason managed to finally put his “tower of power” to the test. It all worked – flawlessly!

Good weather, great food, excellent company and a bit of radio. Who could ask for more? πŸ˜‰
