It was the 2014 CQ WPX RTTY contest

It’s behind us now; but some things remain unsaid.

But first: here’s a photo that Jim AB5JK made, testing out the panoramic feature on his camera phone (or phone camera?):

The unshaven, balding dude to the left is NOT the one who did all the work.

No, our mighty president did all the work, and what a magnificent job it was!! After a long day at work on Friday and a sleepless night on Sunday he simply told me “have to get more QSOs in the log“, and went back to the shack. With sleepy eyes and the help of about 2 gallons of strong coffee he pushed the total to 539 QSOs, good for 247,086 points. Absolutely fabulous!!

Thanks to all of that hard work Jason logged half a dozen new DXCC entities and several new states on various bands. Most of which have been confirmed via the Logbook of The World already. I wonder which award is going to be next: the basic DXCC, or the 5 band WAS?

WAS award totals as of February 18, 2014

We’re still missing a few states on 80 meters; but Jim AB5JK is working hard on that B-I-G 40/80 meters dipole so we should be able to work those missing states in no time at all!

And the DXCC totals you see above (58) are off by one; because we have one DXCC entity that was confirmed by a paper card. So the real total is 59. Only 41 left to go!

And yes, mister president: congratulations, you are now a confirmed contest addict! πŸ˜‰

Second place in North America!!

Oops: in the North American continent πŸ˜‰

A handful of CARC members participated in the JARTS RTTY contest back in October. Didn’t make a million QSOs; but the score was good enough to claim the second place! Yeah, yeah, multi operator North America. Small detail…

Second place, North American continent! Make sure you click the image.

Whoever said you need a big station to score good is a liar! Well done, troops! πŸ™‚

The first meeting of the new year

Will be on Tuesday the 28th. Everyone’s invited!

Maybe they just don’t like us…

Those operators in Arkansas. Maybe.

Fact is that Jason KF5EJX and Erik K5WW were active in the ARRL RTTY Roundup and made QSOs with every state in the contiguous 48; but not with Arkansas. What’s up with those guys??

Or maybe we're just "too close for comfort"?

Or maybe we’re just “too close for comfort”?

Disregard DC. That’s not even a state – although it does count as a multiplier. And our Canadian buddies were surprisingly absent…

Erik operated on Saturday and Jason on Sunday; but that doesn’t make it less of a team effort – and the totals show it!

That must have hurt…

This is the first thing I saw when I arrived at the shack this afternoon:

Big Bird?

Big Bird?

We’re gonna need a new one, Mister President! πŸ˜‰

Oh, what could it be…?

Interesting box I got in the mail on December 31! Addressed to me, but with the club’s call on the address label, hmm…

December 2013 meeting minutes

Ho-ho-ho!

The meeting was called to order at 7:10 PM, December 17, 2013. Attending: Jason KF5EJX, Jim AB5JK, Cici AA5EK, Richard N5YPJ, Roger K0YY, Gary K5QOW and Erik K5WW.

The shack inventory hasn’t been completed yet; it’s going to be a formidable task. Jason says he’s going to do all of that.

Gary, on behalf of his fire department, has donated an Eaton 9130 uninterruptable power supply to the club. It is large and heavy! It’s up and running in the shack; but it does not have a dedicated space yet. It comes with a secondary battery; and the pair should power the shack equipment for quite some time in case of a power failure. Thank you, Gary! Jim recorded Gary’s donation statement; so this will be the first item on the inventory list! πŸ™‚

Jason paid for the new KN5S QSL cards; but states that he doesn’t want to be reimbursed for them. He also doesn’t want to be reimbursed for that (undisclosed) piece of computer hardware he purchased a few weeks ago. He said that the club’s money would be better used for whenΒ we get the tower up, and will have to buy an antenna. Thank you, mister president!

Treasurer Cici reports we currently have $470 in our old sock, which should go a long way towards the purchase of that antenna.

Ever since the November meeting Jim has been listening to the new frequencies that were suggested to us for the repeater, after it gets moved. He said that 147.240 was the cleanest of them all, and that 147.220 and 147.320 suffer from birdies and all kinds of various interference. We decided on 147.240 based on his report; and will get the repeater reprogrammed and up and running as soon as possible. Thanks Jim!

Jason also reports that he has plans to create a list of the “local” amateur radio operators, within a radius of 75 or 80 miles. Operators in that area may not even be aware of our existence. The whole idea behind this is to send them a letter, inviting them to our meetings, or even hold an “open shack” event in March. Seriously, what would we do without Jason? πŸ˜‰

Β The next meeting will be January 28, 2014. Six weeks from now, sigh…

Oh, Jim’s birthday’s on Christmas day! Ho-ho-ho πŸ™‚

Meeting adjourned at 7:50 PM.
