Phone too!!

It doesn’t always have to be RTTY diddles. At the end of October we participated in the CQ WW SSB contest (a bit).

Despite the headaches, back aches, life aches and lack of time we managed to put 328 QSOs in the log; many of those were brand new DXCCs (in SSB anyway).

Thanks to Jim AB5JK we even got a whopping multiplier in the log, one that somebody else had been chasing for quite a while but couldn’t get… (please don’t tell the President 🙂 )

Good times!

October 2015 meeting minutes

Please excuse the minutes; the Secretary was missing in action and the
President took the minutes.

(those are the President’s words, not someone else’s! 🙂 )

The ruff and rowdy group was called to order at 7:10 PM.  In attendance:
David W5DUH, Gary K5QOW, Raul KE5QIT, Jim AB5JK, Jason KS5TX (the artist formally known as KF5EJX), and Paula and Darryel Perry.

Treasurer’s report: after reimbursing Jason $60 for the cost of the server
rack for the shack the funds are $656.00.

The discussion started of with news that the club’s repeater needs to have
the duplexers re-tuned because the coverage range has been suffering lately.

Visitors Paula and Darial Perry are looking into getting their amateur radio licenses;
but were not quite ready to take the test yet.

Raul KE5QIT, our representative from the hospital, has asked us to put together a list of
members’ names and pictures who are active at the shack for the Security department’s records.

Jason KS5TX wants the club to active Amistad National Recreation Area for the upcoming National Parks on the Air to celibrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service in
2016.  So we need to pick a time when it is not blazing hot.  Date to be set in a future meeting.

Gary K5QOW would like to do some practice traffic handling utilizing the repeater and the ham shack to help prepare us for a disaster situation.  More on this subject in future
meetings. (Sounds like there may be some home work involved)

Meeting adjourned a 7:40 PM

The new kid on the block

He’s pretty good, that KS5TX!

He, almost completely by himself, participated in the 2015 edition of the Japanese Amateur Radio Teleprinter Society contest. All by himself he managed to make 699 QSOs; and here’s how he did it:

Yeah, that’s how you win a contest: an foam mattress, a pillow and a blanket! 🙂

A fabulous result, given the not-so-fabulous conditions and all. He even managed to put two new countries in the master log: Israel and Moldova (3 times, no less). Moldova, only known for bearded men (women too), long pipes and goat hair sweaters. Brrr!

Total number of QSOs went up to 822 after some late-comer played a bit in the contest too Sunday afternoon; but it’s safe to say that the new kid can stay!!!!

$1,297,820!!!

No, we didn’t run into a “Nigerian prince” who has too much money. Wouldn’t that be nice…

Instead N5YPJ, KF5EJX, KS5TX and K5WW participated in the Makrothen contest this past weekend. It’s a fun RTTY contest, with scores based on the distance between stations. And we did a lot of miles! Our (claimed) score is 1,297,820 🙂

KN5S 2015 Makrothen score

Yeah, baby!

Watching this score go up by a thousand or more every other minute was a whole lot of fun!!

Unfortunately, we also have some sad news to report. In the middle of the battle we lost our friend KF5EJX forever. Rest in peace, dear friend; and thank you for all the hard work you put in at all the contests. You will be missed forever 🙁

Back on the air!

After two years of inactivity (is that even a word?) KS5TX is back on the air! Or: almost, as he may not even be awake at this time. 😉

Not exactly the same license holder, though. This time KS5TX is registered to a certain Jason Shell. Hmmm, where have I heard this name before….?

RIP KF5EJX. We’ll all miss him. Or will we? 🙂

Congrats, bud! Can’t wait to see that license plate on that truck. And thanks for keeping our “old” call alive!!

54 short

of a 1,000!

Our majestic President Jason KF5EJX, Richard N5YPJ and a turd operator participated in not only the Texas QSO Party this past weekend; but also the CQ WW RTTY contest.

They made 771 QSOs in the RTTY contest, and 175 in the TX QSO party. And they claim they had big fun!

Our little helper

This guy never gets enough credit for the work he does in and around the shack.

The server rack ogre!

Click for the full size image. We assure you: he’s perfectly safe.

He’s our favorite ogre, not afraid to lift everything we weak humans can’t! His red eyes can be a little intimidating; but he’s never hurt any of us and has a really kind soul. 😉
